Essay Contest

There was some discussion about the essay contest the WSDW is sponsoring for high school students.

Some members thought the $500 prize should be a scholarship connected to some type of schooling costs. Others thought it should be a cash prize with no strings attached.

Speakers:
1.
Ben Doty
is a young activist who organized "Students Take a Stand," an antiwar group at West Seattle High School. The name of the group allows them to adopt any other issue in the future.

Ben said many of his peers are preoccupied with shopping, music, video games, etc., and "those things are okay some of the time" but for himself, he can't stop thinking about more important issues. He also mentors younger students, even elementary school age.

Ben's modest, low-key demeanor belies his determination to make a difference. He just graduated, and won a WorldSmart Leadership Award which will enable him to travel internationally with other young people for about 7 months.

Three incumbent candidates for election in 2005 gave excellent short presentations and answered questions from the audience. Richard Conlin and Nick Licata are City Council members; Sue Rahr was appointed King County Sherrif last year by Dave Reichart when he departed for congress.
