34-1250 Precinct Map, 2004 Election
By Dina Johnson, PCO

The map below shows the election results in my neighborhood in the southeast corner of West Seattle. My precinct is colored blue. Gray is Seattle; white is outside the city limits.

PRE-ELECTION ACTION
I introduced myself to my precinct when I ran for PCO last fall, with about 80 colored flyers that included my picture and reasons why I'm running, etc. Some already knew me from when I canvassed & caucused for Dean.

I flyered the neighborhood several times more before November with motivational info, and invitations to a precinct party (no one came, however). I gave them my contact info, in case they needed signs, or had questions about the election. (Only 2 people contacted me.) I called most of them right before the election with reminders.

I even told them I had a bet going that our precinct would out-perform a neighboring precinct.

RESULTS
I wondered if my efforts had any effect. Maybe so!

Turns out my little precinct had a very good turnout (84.4% of registered voters) higher than many of the neighboring precincts. But more signficant, my precinct's voters went for Kerry 84.5%. Only TWO precincts out of the 208 in the 34th district (West Seattle, Vashon Island, parts of Burien & King County) beat that number! Those two precincts also had very active Dem PCOs.

For comparison: In 2000, the turnout in my precinct was 75% and they went 71.4% for Gore.

POST-ELECTION ACTION
I have written a letter to my precinct, reporting the % turnout and % for Kerry and other Dem candidates, all of whom won easily, as did my pet issue, NO on the Monorail "Recall". I printed out the letter and the precinct map posted above. I'll distribute these to my neighbors so they can feel good about how we all did.

I'm also adding a suggestion for them to continue participating, by attending the West Seattle DFA meeting which I host, and/or the 34th District Dems monthly meetings, or the West Seattle Neighbors for Truth and Justice.
